DALLAS, Texas – Authorities have identified the gunman responsible for Wednesday’s deadly sniper attack outside a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. The incident left four people dead, including Jahn, and has sparked widespread alarm about security measures at federal operations.
The violence unfolded shortly before 6:40 a.m. on September 24, 2025, when Dallas police responded to reports of gunfire near the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway. Investigators determined that Jahn had taken position on the rooftop of a building adjacent to the ICE facility, where he opened fire on an unmarked van carrying detainees. Multiple rounds struck the vehicle as it entered the premises, leaving chaos and tragedy in its wake.
According to officials, three detainees were shot during the attack. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital. By midday, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that a second detainee had died from injuries, raising the death toll to three. The third victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. As law enforcement closed in on Jahn’s location, he turned the rifle on himself, fatally ending the standoff with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Dallas Police confirmed Jahn’s death in a statement, emphasizing that the case remains an active and ongoing investigation. Both the FBI and DHS are assisting local authorities in piecing together Jahn’s actions, background, and possible motive. Investigators have not released details about his connections, if any, to the detainees or the facility, leaving unanswered questions at the center of the probe.
The attack has shaken both Dallas residents and federal officials. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is scheduled to speak publicly alongside law enforcement leaders in a press conference addressing the shooting. Congressman Marc Veasey (D–TX) also released a statement, calling the incident “a senseless act of violence against vulnerable individuals” and offering condolences to the victims’ families.
Security experts and former law enforcement officials have already raised concerns about how Jahn was able to access the rooftop and stage an attack near a federal compound. Many are describing the incident as a “serious breach” that underscores the need for urgent reviews of safety protocols surrounding detainee transport and federal facility security. As the investigation unfolds, officials are expected to release further updates in the coming days.
