COLUMBUS, Ga. — An early-morning shooting outside an Amazon warehouse in East Columbus ended in tragedy on Monday after the suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities confirmed.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:30 a.m. to the 5800 block of Osceola Court following reports of an active shooter. When they arrived about 17 minutes later, officers discovered the suspect firing at the building while employees were inside. Investigators identified the gunman as 22-year-old Myles Belyue, a former employee of the facility who had been terminated earlier this month.
Police said Belyue discharged multiple rounds at the warehouse’s front entrance before officers confronted him. A brief standoff followed, but before police could take him into custody, Belyue turned the weapon on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities emphasized that despite several rounds striking the building, none of the workers inside were injured during the incident.
By late Monday morning, reporters at the scene observed at least a dozen bullet holes in the warehouse’s front windows, underscoring how close the gunfire came to harming employees. Police have not disclosed what type of firearm was used, and the suspect’s motive remains unclear. Detectives are continuing to examine Belyue’s background, employment history, and recent activities in hopes of determining what led to the shooting.
The Columbus Division of Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from additional law enforcement agencies. Officials said that while the immediate threat has ended, they are taking the incident seriously and reviewing all aspects of the case to ensure the safety of employees and the surrounding community. Amazon has not yet issued a public statement, though representatives are expected to comment once more information is available.
This shocking event highlights the growing concern over workplace-related violence and its potential impact on employees and communities. While tragedy was narrowly avoided inside the facility, the incident has left many shaken. Police are urging anyone with additional information about Belyue or the shooting to contact investigators. For now, the focus remains on supporting employees and ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
