Motorcyclist Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-35 in San Marcos

A deadly multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in San Marcos claimed the life of a motorcyclist and caused major traffic delays along one of Texas’ busiest highways. The collision happened just before 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 35 southbound near McCarty Lane, according to the San Marcos Police Department.

Investigators say the chain of events began when a motorcycle struck another southbound vehicle. The impact triggered a multi-vehicle pileup that ultimately involved five vehicles. The motorcyclist, identified as 33-year-old Khristian Vicknair of New Braunfels, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. At this time, authorities have not confirmed whether other drivers or passengers were injured.

The crash forced a complete closure of the southbound lanes of I-35 for nearly six hours. Police, firefighters, and emergency crews worked through the night to investigate the collision, assist victims, and clear debris. The San Marcos Police Department’s Collision Investigation Team conducted a detailed scene analysis before reopening the roadway around 9 a.m. The closure caused significant traffic disruptions for early-morning commuters and travelers passing through the San Marcos area.

Authorities have not released further details about what caused the crash or whether factors such as speed, impairment, or weather may have played a role. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Police stressed that the investigation remains active and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

The fatal wreck underscores long-standing concerns about safety on Interstate 35, a major corridor known for heavy traffic, frequent construction zones, and high-speed conditions. In recent months, multiple fatal crashes have been reported along the same stretch of roadway, raising renewed calls for greater caution among drivers. Police also reminded motorists that motorcycles are harder to see than larger vehicles and require extra attention to avoid dangerous collisions.

Family, friends, and the New Braunfels community are now mourning the sudden loss of Khristian Vicknair, whose life was cut short in the early hours of Sunday morning. As the investigation continues, authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility is reduced and fatigue or impaired driving often contribute to serious accidents.
