NASHUA, N.H. — What was meant to be a night of joy turned into horror on Saturday when gunfire erupted at a wedding reception at the Sky Meadow Country Club. Authorities confirmed that one guest was killed and several others were injured in the chaos as the bride and groom prepared for their first dance. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Hunter Nadeau, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and now faces murder charges. Additional charges are expected for the wounded victims.
Police identified the man killed as 59-year-old Robert Steven DeCesare. Witnesses described a terrifying scene in which Nadeau allegedly entered the reception wearing a mask, raised his middle finger to the crowd, and shouted political statements including “Free Palestine” and “the children are safe” before opening fire. Guests recalled hearing as many as six gunshots as panic spread through the venue. Many people were injured not only by the gunfire but also while fleeing to safety.
Tom Bartelson, the groom’s uncle, recounted the horrifying moment the shooting began. “We were getting together for a dance for the bride and groom and then all chaos went off. We heard about six shots, and everybody ducked for cover. Next thing you know, we’re rushed into safe spots.” At least six people were hospitalized, though authorities confirmed none of their injuries were life-threatening.
Early confusion at the scene led to reports that two shooters may have been involved, sparking a large-scale manhunt across southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. However, investigators later determined through video surveillance that Nadeau acted alone. Officials praised the swift police response, which led to his arrest before further violence could occur.
For families inside the wedding, the chaos brought fear and heartbreak. Evie O’Rourke, mother of the victim, described the desperate search for her son during the panic. “We don’t know where he is. He went down. My daughter-in-law and granddaughter escaped … They saw my son go down and they saw blood, and we can’t find him.” Her son, DeCesare, was later confirmed as the victim who lost his life.
Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families and gratitude to law enforcement. “Our hearts go out to the families of those killed or injured. Thank you to the Nashua PD for their quick work in capturing the person of interest. This truly can happen anywhere.” Authorities said the motive remains under investigation as the community reels from a tragedy that shattered what should have been a joyous occasion.
