KING WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A quiet Saturday morning turned tragic when a 35-year-old man lost his life in a single-vehicle crash in King William County. Authorities say the fatal accident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on October 25, 2025, along the 14000 block of West River Road, a rural stretch often known for sharp curves and limited visibility.
According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), a black Ram 1500 traveling eastbound veered off the left side of the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. The pickup struck several trees before finally coming to rest along the wooded edge of the road. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the driver, identified as Rafael William Smith Polanco of West Point, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators confirmed that Polanco was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle during the violent impact. Authorities believe that wearing a seatbelt could have significantly reduced the severity of his injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and officials say no passengers were present in the truck at the time.
For several hours, West River Road remained closed to allow crash reconstruction teams and first responders to carefully document the scene and remove debris. The road was later reopened once investigators completed their initial assessment. Police are examining possible contributing factors, including speed, fatigue, and roadway conditions, to determine what led to the deadly crash.
The Virginia State Police are urging all motorists to wear seatbelts and remain attentive while driving, particularly during early morning hours when darkness, fog, or low visibility can increase the likelihood of accidents. “Seatbelts save lives,” one investigator noted. “A simple click can mean the difference between life and death in a crash like this.”
The loss of Rafael Polanco has left his family, friends, and the West Point community devastated. Known for his kind heart and hardworking nature, Polanco’s untimely passing has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from those who knew him best. As investigators continue their work, residents of King William County are reminded of the fragile nature of life and the importance of safety behind the wheel.
