64-Year-Old Benton Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Route 20 in Jo Daviess County

A tragic crash in Jo Daviess County on Thursday night claimed the life of a 64-year-old driver after two vehicles collided along U.S. Route 20. The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the victim was Aleksandr Avanesov of Benton, Wisconsin. Deputies and emergency responders were called to the scene around 8:17 p.m. following multiple reports of a serious collision near Galena.

When first responders arrived, they discovered two heavily damaged vehicles — a Chrysler and a Rivian — at the crash site. Authorities said Avanesov’s Chrysler was found in a ditch off the roadway, while the Rivian, driven by 42-year-old Patrick Jung of Galena, Illinois, was left blocking traffic in the eastbound lane. Emergency medical personnel quickly rendered aid to all parties involved. Avanesov was transported to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

According to investigators, preliminary findings suggest that Avanesov was driving westbound on U.S. Route 20 when, for reasons still unknown, his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane. His Chrysler collided with Jung’s Rivian, causing extensive front-end damage to both vehicles. The impact forced Avanesov’s car off the road and into a ditch, while Jung and his passenger, identified as Rhea Jung, were evaluated at the scene but did not require hospitalization.

Deputies temporarily closed off the crash area to allow investigators to document the scene, collect evidence, and remove debris from the roadway. Tow trucks later cleared both vehicles, allowing traffic to resume. The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that accident reconstruction specialists are working to determine what caused Avanesov’s vehicle to drift across the center line. Investigators are examining possible contributing factors such as driver fatigue, road conditions, or mechanical failure.

Authorities extended their condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Avanesov, describing the crash as a tragic loss for the local community. No citations or charges have been filed, and officials emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing. Residents who witnessed the collision or have dashcam footage from around the time of the incident are urged to contact the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

Local residents noted that the stretch of U.S. Route 20 where the crash occurred has seen several serious accidents in recent years, largely due to limited lighting and winding curves. Law enforcement and transportation officials continue to assess potential safety improvements in the area. As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers to stay alert, obey speed limits, and exercise caution — especially at night when visibility is poor.
