WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. — A young woman has died following a devastating crash Monday morning on Interstate 88, according to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Araceli Zepeda of Rochelle, whose life was tragically cut short after a vehicle she was riding in collided with another car and veered off the highway.
Officials said the crash occurred around 9:22 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-88. Investigators reported that Zepeda was a passenger in a vehicle traveling west when it collided with another car, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then left the roadway and crashed into a line of trees along the shoulder. The impact caused significant damage, leaving both passengers trapped as emergency crews raced to the scene.
First responders arrived quickly and found Zepeda unresponsive. Paramedics worked to stabilize her before she was airlifted to a Rockford hospital for emergency treatment. Despite hours of effort by medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 7:59 p.m. Monday evening.
