Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck by Car in Downtown Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating a tragic collision that claimed the life of a bicyclist Monday evening in the downtown area. The victim, identified as 59-year-old Scott Hunt, died after being struck by a vehicle near 500 South and 300 West, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 7:29 p.m., when multiple 911 calls were made reporting that a man on a bicycle had been hit by a car. Officers from the SLCPD Central Patrol Division, along with personnel from Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance, rushed to the scene and found Hunt suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries. First responders provided emergency medical care before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

A preliminary investigation determined that Hunt was crossing 500 South on his bicycle near 300 West when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Police said no arrests or citations have been issued at this stage, pending further review of the evidence.

Specialists from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (CAR) Team and the SLCPD Crime Lab responded to document the scene, collect physical evidence, and analyze the circumstances that led to the fatal crash. Investigators are working to determine contributing factors, such as speed, visibility, and potential driver or cyclist impairment. Officials noted that lighting conditions and traffic flow at the time of the incident may also play a role in understanding what happened.

Police emphasized that the information released so far is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation develops. The department is asking any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the area at the time of the collision to come forward and assist detectives. SLCPD has not released additional details regarding potential charges or fault as the review continues.

Authorities extended their condolences to Scott Hunt’s family and friends, expressing sorrow for the loss of life in the downtown community.
