CANTON, Ga. — A devastating crash on Sunday evening claimed the life of a bicyclist in Cherokee County after a pickup truck veered across lanes and struck him head-on. Authorities identified the victim as 51-year-old Carlos Moreno, a resident of Alpharetta, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Sugar Pike Road near Canton. Investigators say a Rivian pickup truck, driven by a 42-year-old Canton man, crossed both travel lanes before colliding directly with Moreno, who had been riding in the opposite direction. Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded quickly, but despite their efforts, Moreno could not be revived due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver was taken into custody at the scene and now faces several serious charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, tampering with evidence, open container violation, and driving too fast for conditions. Authorities confirmed that he is currently being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. Early findings from the Traffic Enforcement Unit indicate that both alcohol impairment and excessive speed were likely contributing factors in the fatal crash.
“This accident was entirely preventable,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Impaired drivers are a danger to everyone on the road and can senselessly destroy lives. Separate from the criminal charges, a victim’s family may also pursue a civil wrongful death claim against the responsible party.” Experts note that such claims can provide compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and other damages suffered by surviving family members.
