Murder Suspect Dies by Suicide Following Standoff in Van Alstyne

CARROLLTON, Texas — A man suspected in the fatal shooting of a woman in Carrollton was located early Tuesday morning through cell phone tracking and later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Van Alstyne, authorities confirmed.

According to the Carrollton Police Department, officers had been searching for Jomaar Lee Davis, who was wanted in connection with the killing of 24-year-old Briana Casto. The incident occurred Monday morning around 10:15 a.m. in the 4600 block of North Josey Lane, where officers discovered Casto suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly identified Davis, her boyfriend, as the primary suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.

By early Tuesday, around 3:30 a.m., Van Alstyne police received a notification indicating that Davis’s cell phone was active within their jurisdiction, roughly 40 miles north of Carrollton. Responding officers located his vehicle and found Davis barricaded inside. Negotiators made contact with him by phone, but communication was abruptly cut off. As members of a SWAT team approached the vehicle, officers heard a single gunshot.

Police confirmed that Davis had shot himself. First responders immediately administered lifesaving measures before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured during the standoff. The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, and the police departments of Anna and Howe, all of which assisted the Carrollton Police Department.

The heavy police presence in the area prompted Partin Elementary School in Van Alstyne to delay its opening on Tuesday morning as a precaution. Authorities assured the public that there was no ongoing threat following Davis’s death. The investigation is continuing as detectives work to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the murder and subsequent standoff.

Carrollton police expressed condolences to the family of Briana Casto, calling the case a devastating act of domestic violence. Officials also thanked all assisting agencies for their coordination in locating the suspect. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones as they begin to process this tragic loss,” police said in a statement.
