Des Moines Man Dies After Pickup Truck Crash North of Bondurant

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Authorities have identified the man killed in a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning north of Bondurant. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 42-year-old Jasen W. Burton of Des Moines died after his pickup truck veered off Highway 65 near Northeast 112th Street. The crash occurred shortly after 4:20 a.m., prompting a rapid response from local fire, rescue, and law enforcement agencies.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames coming from underneath the truck shortly after it left the roadway. Several bystanders rushed to help and managed to pull Burton from the vehicle before first responders arrived. Despite their heroic efforts, Burton was unresponsive when deputies and paramedics reached the scene. Emergency crews from Bondurant and Mitchellville joined sheriff’s deputies in performing life-saving measures before he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Sadly, Burton succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

In a public statement, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office extended heartfelt condolences to Burton’s family and commended the bravery of the witnesses who stopped to help. “Their quick actions in such a dangerous situation reflect true compassion and courage,” an official said. Authorities emphasized that while their efforts could not change the outcome, their intervention was vital in giving Burton the best possible chance of survival.

Investigators continue to examine the cause of the crash, including potential mechanical issues, road conditions, and environmental factors. Deputies are reviewing eyewitness accounts and evidence collected from the scene to determine why the vehicle veered off the highway. Officials said no other vehicles were involved, and the crash appears to have been an isolated incident. A full report will be completed once results from the medical examination and vehicle inspection are finalized.

Residents near the crash site described being awakened by the sound of emergency sirens early Monday. Some noted that the stretch of Highway 65 where the accident occurred has seen multiple crashes in recent years, often due to sharp curves and limited visibility during early morning hours. The sheriff’s office reminded motorists to stay alert, especially during low-light conditions when fatigue or darkness can make rural roads more dangerous.

As the investigation continues, the Bondurant community is mourning the loss of Jasen Burton, remembered as a hardworking and kind-hearted man devoted to his family. Friends and relatives have shared tributes online, expressing grief and gratitude for the outpouring of community support. Authorities said more information will be released once the investigation is complete.
