PIKE COUNTY, Pa.— Authorities are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 65-year-old Bethel man late this week in Porter Township. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the incident occurred along Route 402, just north of the Bushkill area, in a wooded section known for sharp curves and limited visibility.

Emergency crews responded to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle that had veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Upon arrival, troopers found the driver, identified as Joseph Bylina, still inside the severely damaged vehicle. First responders quickly worked to assist him and transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite their best efforts, officials later confirmed that Bylina succumbed to his injuries. No other occupants or vehicles were involved.
Investigators said the crash took place in a challenging stretch of Route 402, where the vehicle appeared to have drifted from the travel lane before colliding head-on with a tree along the roadside. The impact caused heavy damage to the front of the car, prompting a temporary road closure while crews cleared the debris. Route 402 was reopened after approximately two hours.
Following a preliminary investigation, state police said alcohol use is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash. Authorities are examining several elements, including vehicle speed, road conditions, and environmental factors at the time of the collision. Toxicology results and crash reconstruction analysis will help provide a clearer understanding of what led to the tragic incident.
Troopers extended their condolences to Bylina’s family and friends, calling the accident a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving. Police urged motorists to make responsible choices by using designated drivers, arranging alternative transportation, or relying on ride-sharing services if they plan to drink. They also cautioned that even a small amount of alcohol can slow reaction time and impair judgment, especially on winding or poorly lit roads.
Local residents expressed sadness after learning about the fatal crash, describing Route 402 as a narrow and curvy roadway that becomes particularly treacherous at night or during poor weather. Authorities continue to review evidence and data from the scene, promising a thorough investigation. In the meantime, officials are reminding all drivers to buckle up, stay alert, and practice safe driving habits to help prevent future tragedies on Pennsylvania roads.
