CONECUH COUNTY, Ala. — Authorities have confirmed the death of an 88-year-old Conecuh County woman following a tragic crash involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and a commercial truck on Monday afternoon. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) identified the victim as Evelyn Ryals Green, a beloved member of the Range community.
According to ALEA, the fatal crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Alabama Highway 41 near the 29-mile marker, approximately four miles south of Repton. Investigators said Green was operating a 1999 Polaris Sportsman ATV when it was struck by a 2020 Mack Pinnacle tractor-trailer driven by 30-year-old Aaron Lee Rose of Fort White, Florida. The impact caused severe damage to the ATV, leaving Green fatally injured at the scene despite the rapid response from emergency crews.
Officials stated that the collision serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with operating smaller recreational vehicles near larger commercial trucks on public roadways. “The difference in size and speed between an ATV and a tractor-trailer can have devastating consequences,” one investigator noted. ALEA troopers from the Highway Patrol Division are leading the investigation, reviewing roadway conditions, visibility, and potential mechanical factors that may have contributed to the deadly incident.
Authorities are also interviewing witnesses and analyzing evidence from the scene, including possible video footage from nearby areas, to determine the exact sequence of events. No further information has been released regarding the condition of the truck driver. ALEA emphasized that their investigation remains ongoing and that all findings will be shared once verified.
Green’s passing has deeply affected the Range community, where she was known as a kind and active resident who often participated in local events and church activities. Friends and neighbors described her as “a pillar of kindness” and “a true friend to everyone.” Community members have expressed their condolences to Green’s family, calling her death a heartbreaking loss for the small, close-knit area.
ALEA officials are urging drivers and ATV riders alike to exercise extreme caution on Alabama roadways, noting that ATVs are primarily designed for off-road use. The agency continues to promote public awareness campaigns focused on improving roadway safety and reducing future tragedies involving mixed-vehicle traffic. As the investigation continues, officials reaffirm their commitment to providing answers to Green’s family while working toward safer roads for all Alabama residents.
