45-Year-Old Dwanneich Hammonds Fatally Shot in SouthPark Apartment Garage

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have identified the woman who was shot and killed Monday morning inside the parking garage of a SouthPark apartment complex. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) confirmed the victim as 45-year-old Dwanneich Hammonds, whose death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Officers were dispatched to the Hazel SouthPark Apartments on Barclay Downs Drive shortly before 7 a.m. after receiving reports of an assault involving a deadly weapon. When they arrived, they found Hammonds suffering from gunshot wounds inside the complex’s parking garage. Emergency responders from MEDIC rushed her to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Homicide detectives have since taken over the investigation and are working to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Police have not released any details regarding a possible motive or suspect. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made, and officials continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.

Residents of the complex told Channel 9 News that the shooting appeared to have taken place within the underground parking area of the apartments, sparking concern among tenants who said the neighborhood is typically quiet and secure. Several residents described being startled by the sound of gunfire early Monday morning before police arrived.

CMPD officers spent much of the day processing the scene and gathering evidence from the parking area. Detectives are also reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses in an effort to identify the person responsible. Officials have not yet said whether Hammonds lived at the complex or was visiting someone at the time of the shooting.

As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Authorities have also reminded residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity as they work to bring justice to Hammonds and her grieving family.
