MERCER BOROUGH — A tragic accident has claimed the life of a 19-year-old Mercer Borough resident, who succumbed to his injuries days after being struck by a van while riding his bicycle last week. Authorities have identified the victim as Kyle Hites, whose death has left the local community heartbroken.

According to Chief Robert Davis of the Mercer Borough Police Department, the collision occurred on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at approximately 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Penn Avenue in Mercer Borough. Investigators said Hites had been riding his bicycle in the area at night and was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the incident, which may have made it difficult for drivers to see him.
Police reported that Hites had exited a driveway and entered the roadway when he was struck by an oncoming van. The impact left him critically injured, prompting first responders to call for an emergency medical helicopter. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors worked tirelessly to save his life.
Despite several days of intensive medical care, Hites died from his injuries on Monday, October 13. His passing has deeply affected family, friends, and community members who describe him as a kind-hearted and energetic young man with a bright future ahead.
Chief Davis confirmed that no charges have been filed in connection with the crash. Authorities have not released the identity of the van’s driver but said the investigation remains ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest that visibility and nighttime conditions may have been contributing factors.
The Mercer Borough Police Department continues to review all aspects of the tragic accident. As the community mourns the loss of a young life cut short, officials are reminding both motorists and cyclists to exercise caution, especially after dark, by ensuring proper lighting, reflective gear, and awareness on the road to help prevent similar tragedies.
