ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning along Interstate 12 as 24-year-old Dentreal A. Mouton, a resident of Lafayette. According to the Louisiana State Police (LSP), the tragic incident happened around 1:20 a.m. near the La. 1249 exit on westbound I-12.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2019 Honda Accord traveling in the left lane struck Mouton, who was walking along the interstate in the same direction as the vehicle. Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene, but despite their efforts, Mouton was pronounced dead due to the severe injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the Honda was unharmed.
As part of the ongoing investigation, troopers obtained toxicology samples from both the driver and Mouton to determine if impairment played a role in the crash. Authorities are also reviewing visibility conditions, road lighting, and driver behavior to better understand what led to the fatal impact. At this stage, no charges have been filed, and the Louisiana State Police have not confirmed whether factors such as speed or distraction contributed to the incident.
Officials noted that this tragedy is being treated as a single-vehicle pedestrian crash, with investigators meticulously documenting the scene, gathering evidence, and interviewing any potential witnesses. “Our goal is to determine exactly what happened and help prevent similar incidents in the future,” an LSP spokesperson said.
The Lafayette community has expressed deep sorrow over Mouton’s passing. Friends and relatives described him as a kind and hardworking young man with strong ties to his hometown. “He was loved by everyone who knew him,” one friend shared. “It’s heartbreaking to think he’s gone so suddenly.” Community members have come together to support Mouton’s family during this difficult time.
State Police continue to urge both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours when visibility is reduced. They advise motorists to stay alert for any obstacles or individuals along roadways and remind pedestrians to avoid walking on interstates whenever possible. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Louisiana State Police to assist with the investigation.
