Authorities in southern Mississippi are investigating two fatal traffic accidents that occurred within hours of each other over the weekend. The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) confirmed that both incidents — one in Lincoln County and the other in Lawrence County — resulted in the deaths of two men and left a teenage girl seriously injured.
The first crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, along Highway 84 in Lincoln County. According to investigators, a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling west when it suddenly veered off the roadway and struck an embankment. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the driver, identified as 63-year-old Melvin Thompson of Hattiesburg, to King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven. Despite efforts by medical staff, he was later pronounced dead.
Officials noted that the section of Highway 84 where the crash occurred is known for sharp curves and reduced nighttime visibility, which may have contributed to the accident. However, the exact cause remains under investigation as MHP examines road conditions, the mechanical state of the vehicle, and other potential contributing factors. Local authorities have extended condolences to Thompson’s family and friends, describing him as a respected community member known for his kindness and generosity.
Just a few hours later, around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, troopers responded to a second deadly crash on Highway 43 in Lawrence County. Investigators said a 2015 Nissan Altima, which had been involved in a brief pursuit with a Lawrence County deputy, left the roadway and overturned several times. The driver, 42-year-old Michael Lyons of Vicksburg, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 15-year-old female passenger traveling with Lyons suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson. Her current condition has not been released, but authorities confirmed that she remains under medical care and her family has been notified. The Mississippi Highway Patrol and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office are working together to determine the circumstances leading to the pursuit and subsequent crash.
Both fatal incidents have renewed concerns over nighttime driving safety on Mississippi’s rural highways. Officials are reminding motorists to remain vigilant, reduce speed during low-visibility hours, and always wear seatbelts. Investigations into both crashes remain ongoing as MHP awaits final reports from forensic and reconstruction teams.
