ROBERTSON COUNTY, Texas – A deadly crash on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a Plantersville man and left another driver with minor injuries, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The two-vehicle collision happened southeast of New Baden along FM-1940, between Clyde Accord Road and Cobb Branch Road.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. when a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 51-year-old James Lohse of Plantersville was traveling northbound. For reasons still under investigation, Lohse’s vehicle crossed into the southbound lane while in a marked no-passing zone and collided head-on with a 2021 Ford F-350 pickup truck.
The impact was severe, and Lohse suffered fatal injuries. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene despite rapid response efforts. The driver of the Ford F-350 sustained only minor injuries and did not require hospitalization, according to officials. DPS confirmed that the collision remains under investigation as troopers work to identify the cause.
Sgt. Justin Ruiz with DPS stated that investigators are examining whether distraction, fatigue, or a possible medical episode may have caused Lohse to cross into the opposite lane. Weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were not immediately disclosed. Toxicology testing, which is standard in fatal crashes, will also be conducted, though authorities have not indicated alcohol or drugs played a role.
The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office reported that FM-1940 was closed for several hours following the collision to allow emergency crews to process the scene and clear debris. Local residents said the roadway is narrow and frequently used by farm equipment and heavy trucks, making driving more hazardous. Officials noted that the no-passing zone where the crash occurred is clearly marked due to limited visibility along that stretch.
Lohse’s death is a tragic reminder of the dangers of head-on crashes, which often carry fatal consequences due to the force of impact. The community of Plantersville is mourning his sudden loss, while DPS continues urging motorists to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and avoid passing in restricted zones. The investigation into the deadly crash remains ongoing, and more details are expected to be released in the coming days.
