Lake Charles Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash Near Black Bayou Bridge

CALCASIEU PARISH, La. — Authorities are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Lake Charles man on Sunday morning. The Louisiana State Police reported that the incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on Louisiana Highway 384, near the Black Bayou Bridge in the Deatonville area. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Eric Linden of Lake Charles.

According to preliminary findings, Linden was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on La. 384 toward the closed bridge when his vehicle struck a crossing arm positioned in front of it. The collision caused the truck to overturn, resulting in severe damage. Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene after receiving multiple calls about the crash. Linden was transported to a nearby hospital, where, despite efforts by medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police collected a routine toxicology sample from Linden to help determine whether any impairing substances contributed to the crash. Authorities emphasized that this procedure is standard in all fatal accidents. The results, along with other investigative findings, will help establish the circumstances that led to the vehicle striking the barrier and overturning.

Investigators continue to analyze several factors, including roadway conditions, vehicle performance, and driver behavior. The section of La. 384 near the Black Bayou Bridge has limited access due to its closure, prompting officials to review whether warning signs or barriers may have played a role in the incident. At this time, there is no indication of foul play, and the crash is being treated as an accident.

The crash temporarily disrupted traffic in the area as emergency crews worked to clear debris and ensure the roadway was safe. Once the vehicle was removed and the scene processed, traffic flow returned to normal. Local residents have expressed sympathy for Linden’s family, remembering him as a well-liked member of the community.

Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and observe all road closures and posted warnings, especially near construction or restricted zones. The Louisiana State Police said the tragic incident highlights how quickly accidents can occur and reinforces the importance of caution on state highways. The investigation remains active, and further updates will be released once it concludes.
